Flues for chimneys

Flues for chimneys: premium quality products

We have a vast range of fittings, accessories and pipes for flues for chimneys, specifically designed to build exhaust fume systems. Our products are designed to offer the best possible performance, they are easy to install, and will fit all needs and requirements.

Flues are essential parts of all chimneys. They guarantee the proper ventilation of the heating system and the safe and efficient removal of its exhaust gases. Should there not be a properly installed flue, fume and dangerous exhaust gases could spread into the room and cause severe health problems to you and your family.

Our flues come at a wide variety of sizes and forms and are designed to fit all types of chimneys. It is very important that you choose the right type of flue that has all the features necessary to allow your chimney to function properly. You should always entrust an expert with the installation, in order to make sure that it is performed accordingly and in compliance with the regulations in effect.

Functioning of flues for chimneys based on the principle of communicating vessels

Are you wondering how a chimney actually works?

As a matter of fact, the functioning of a flue system is based on the principle of communicating vessels , according to which, due to gravity, a homogeneous (same density) fluid that is inside a set of two or more connected containers, will settle and balance out to the same level in all of the containers, regardless of their shape and volume.

This principle also applies to air since air is, in fact, a fluid and has its own mass, weight and density (that is the ratio of mass to volume).
The density of a fluid also depends on its temperature: the higher the temperature, the lower the density.

Let us look at this example

Immagine you have two vertical flue systems with identical height, an horizontal segment at their base and a gate valve at the centre that separates the two flue systems. At ambient temperature, the air inside the two chimneys will have the same exact density (and the same weight).
But, if we expose one of the flue systems to a heat source, the temperature of the air inside the flue will rise, its density will decrease, and a part of that air (gas) will be discharged from the flue system.

At this point, if we open the gate valve, allowing  the two flue systems to communicate, we shall notice that the air of the cold flue system moves and enters the warm flue system filling up the space emptied during the discharge.
Once the cold air blends with the warm air, it becomes warmer and lighter, and it is propelled upwards and towards the upper part of the flue system.
We can therefore state that, the ensemble of these two flue systems with the addition of constant heat, is what actually determines the continuous functioning of the whole system.

How do flues for chimneys actually behave

Chimneys have a tendency of being affected by environmental conditions because, depending on how the weather changes, the atmospheric pressure might change as well.
As a matter of fact, a chimney has an adequate draught when the difference between external and internal pressure ranges from 10 to 20 Pascal.
In order to facilitate the natural draught of a chimney, you should increase its height thus increasing the height of the external column of air.

These techniques and procedures are the same whether it is an external (visible) flue for chimney, or whether the duct for exhaust fume is inside a shaft (hidden).

Regulations regarding flues for chimneys

The regulations for flues represent an important secutiry measure put in place in order to ensure the safe function of chimneys. Flues for chimneys must be installed in compliance with the law, and undergo regular maintenance, as required by local building regulations and as instructed by the manufacturer, to ensure that they are properly vented and that they correctly remove fumes and exhaust gases produced from fuel combustion. Moreover, correctly installed flues will help reduce energy losses and the risk of carbon monoxide poisonings.

The regulations to make reference to is the “regulation UNI 10683” that imposes a series of obligations such as the obligation to install an adequate exhaust fume system on pellet and wood stoves and it also describes exactly how said system should be designed.
